About The Author: Mortimer Luddington Menpes (1855–1938) was an Australian-born painter and printmaker known for his Japonist style. After moving to London, he studied at the School of Art and exhibited at the Royal Academy. Mentored by James McNeill Whistler, Menpes embraced Japanese techniques and traveled to Japan in 1887. His successful 1888 solo exhibition launched his career. Menpes later worked as a war artist in India, China, and South Africa, becoming a prominent figure in British society. and Geraldine Edith Mitton (1868–1955), known by her pen name G. E. Mitton, was an English novelist, biographer, and guidebook writer. Born in Bishop Auckland, she moved to London in 1896, where she worked with Walter Besant on a London survey. Mitton joined A & C Black in 1899, contributing to Who's Who. In 1920, she married Sir George Scott, with whom she co-authored novels set in Burma. She also wrote his biography, Scott of the Shan Hills (1936). Mitton’s other works include The Opportunist (1902), The Children’s Book of Stars (1907), and The Lost Cities of Ceylon (1916).
