A propos de cet article

Description :

THERE ARE NO TARIFFS OR CUSTOMS DUTIES ON BOOKS. This book 'does what it says on the tin', presenting the reader with brief histories, and line drawings, of public statues which were in London in the 1920s. It is quite likely that a number of these no longer exist, since World War II and the general re-development of the city during the 20th century will no doubt have meant that they have been removed or lost, so the book offers an interesting historical view of the British capital. Sitwell's commentary on the statues is delightfully 'personal', making them easy to read and enjoy. Sir Francis Osbert Sacheverell Sitwell, 5th Baronet CH CBE (1892?1969) was an English writer, brother of Edith Sitwell and Sacheverell Sitwell. Like them, he devoted his life to art and literature. This book does not appear in the online list of his publications, but its publication is confirmed in the British Library catalogue. Nina Hamnett (1890?1956) was a Welsh artist and writer, and an expert on sailors' shanties, who became known as the 'Queen of Bohemia' because of her extraordinary life-style. Our book is not, apparently, one of the numbered limited edition (possibly issued at the same time), but is in very nice condition for its age, bound in buff cloth with a black line drawing of a statue on the front, and title in black lettering on the spine. The spine is darkened compared with the rest of the cover, and there is a little external wear - bumped corners, a little shelf wear to top & tail of spine, and generally 'ageworn' appearance - but inside, is firmly bound with clean, bright pages and no sign of foxing apart from one or two tiny spots on the rear fep. A previous owner's name and address written in sepia ink on the front fep. N° de réf. du vendeur 412992
