Paperback in Fine condition, pp72, b&w illustrations. PETER F. ANSON (1889-1975) is an author whose out-of-print books are collected by nautical enthusiasts and connoisseurs of all things pre-1960s Anglo-Catholic. He was an authority on the revival of the religious orders in Anglicanism, and on episcopi vagantes. His recherché study Fashions in Church Furnishings is apparently soon to be reissued in a facsimile edition. When the Benedictine life in the Anglican Communion was in its infancy, in 1913 he was one of those members of the Caldey Community who went over to Rome. In 1924, he left the cloister, and the books followed. He was not easy to live with, but had an arch sense of humour, and liked to be surrounded by young men. In the slim volume Yelton reproduces some of Anson's black-and-white drawings, which are part of his books' charm; and writes first about the life, then the work, then the Caldey episode in detail, and finally offers a nuanced answer to the question whether Anson was a dilettante or a historian of lasting value. The bibliography reveals just how prolific he was. N° de réf. du vendeur 010211
