[Fantasy Novel] SECOND EDITION. Octavo (19 x 13cm), pp.xvi; 348 [44]. A very early issue, with the publisher's catalogue dated February 1874. Publisher's green cloth, with gilt titles to spine and upper, and a silver urn decoration stamped to upper. Brown-coated endpapers. Hinges split, but holding firm. Gently toned throughout, with spotting to first and final few leaves, otherwise internally clean. Moderate general wear to cloth, with some loss to head and tail of spine, and toning to spine. Good. Arguably the first modern Fantasy novel, originally published in a small edition of 250 copies in 1837 by the daughter of Romantic poet Samuel Taylor Colderidge. Unusual for nineteenth-century literature, it is not burdened by high moral didacticism or intimately drawn characters, but is instead focused on its Fantastic plot, set in the wild landscape of Cumberland and Westmorland, and interspersed with poetry. This second edition, published by her family to bring the little-known work to a wider audience, is also rare.…
