Copper engraving and letterpress, in contemporary half leather binding over marbled cardboards, spines with gilt ornamental title printing, edges sprinkled. Collectable set of the second, most comprehensive edition of the meritorious dictionary of Charles Hutton about mathematics and its applications in contemporary meteorology and astronomy, architecture and construction, hydrology, fortification, machinery etc. Author, Content, Illustration: Charles Hutton (1737-1823) was an English mathematician and surveyor, as well as professor of mathematics at the Royal Military Academy from 1773 to 1807. He is probably best remembered for his calculation of the density of the earth in ca. 1774. Present dictionary compiled with accuracy by him was a valuable contribution to scientific biography. The striking copper engraved plates include no. XII, a »General View of Fortification«, and no. XV, »Herschel's Telescope«. The first edition of this important reference work was published in 1796. Condition Report: Missing plates XXXVI-XL. Spines with skilful leather rebacking incorporating the largest part of the original material marbled covers slightly worn, text pages occasionally with light foxing, otherwise well preserved set with fresh plates.
