A propos de cet article

Oblong quarto measuring 12" x 8". Wooden album with etched title on the front board. Contains 253 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 2.75" x 3.75" and 2.5" x 4.25" with captions. Very good album with chips and tears with near fine photographs. A photo album compiled by Sarah and Morrie Hurwitz during a tour of Western America in 1939. The road trip follows a common route but what is most remarkable about the album are the long often humorous captions and the fact that they were able to visit two world fairs, New York and San Francisco. They begin with a train trip and head towards the New York World’s Fair. Following this they stayed in New Orleans and continued West towards the Grand Canyon. One photo of the couple overlooking the Grand Canyon reads, "Morris and Sarah toying with the idea of buying the place." They continued on to California where they photographed Los Angeles’ Chinatown which they caption "China City," the World’s Fair, and Yosemite and the "big trees." In San Francisco they chartered a plane writing, "only the brave deserve the fair – so we decided to go up in an airplane." These images show views of Alcatraz, Oakland Bridge, and Treasure Island. After California they traveled to Yellowstone and onto Salt Lake City where they boarded the Rio Grande Railroad. In Colorado they visited Pike’s Peak and the Royal Gorge. Towards the end of the album they visit a copper mine in Utah writing, "where all mining of copper, some gold and silver, is conducted above the surface. The mountain sides are terraced and the mountain is being gradually razed." The album ends with the couple visiting friends in Chicago where they went fishing in Lake Michigan. Throughout the album other cultures and races are referenced such as African-Americans in New Orleans, Asian-Americans in California and Native Americans in the Southwest. In Arizona they photograph "two Hopi Indian dances (the "Buffalo" and the "Eagle"). The Indians are in dead earnest." A photo from the San Francisco fair reads, "Pacifica" and Fountain group of Inca Indians gambling (probably shooting craps)." In Los Angeles they capture scenes in China town writing under one portrait, "a fine figure of a Chinese sage, who is extremely grateful when you buy spearmint gum from him." A wonderful collection of photographs depicting a couple’s trip west in the late 1930s.…
