A propos de cet article

Oblong small quarto measuring 11" x 7". String-tied suede photo album with "5th Infantry Camp Paraiso, C.Z." printed on the front board with illustrations. Contains 183 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1" x 1" and 4.5" x 6.5" with some captions. Very good album with rubbing, chips, and tears with near fine photographs. A photo album kept by Paul Sullivan while serving in Panama with the 5th Infantry at Camp Paraiso from 1930 through 1941. Sullivan includes photos of him with other infantrymen, local women, and the barracks itself. The men pose in the jungle and are often shirtless due to the heat. A later photo shows Sullivan posed in a Fort McKinley t-shirt which is presumably where he did his boot camp training. Some of the photos show the men taking a break and drinking beer in a field, others include nature photography of the areas. Natives of the area are photographed in traditional dress and posed with their children. More professional looking photographs are featured from a trip to Panama by President Roosevelt including a photo in his American flag clad car and him posed with a Navy officer after landing in the region. One section of photos shows the men posed with a large machine gun. Towards the end of the album the photos include numerous portrait style photos of well-dressed Panamanians with some of the captions reading "New York" from a trip north. Other photos show men paddling out through waves in a canoe and one of a man surfing. A wonderful collection of photographs following a man's Army years in Panama.…
