Paperback. Etat : Good. Some books exist to inspire. Some exist to console. And some exist for the far less sentimental purpose of ensuring that aspiring pianists can run their fingers up and down in approved patterns until both student and household are spiritually altered by repetition. Scales and Arpeggios ? Grade 5 ? Piano belongs proudly to this last and deeply character-building category. Published in 1994 by ABRSM Publishing and attributed to The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, this is not a book of romance, rebellion or sweeping artistic freedom. It is, instead, a compact manual of order, discipline and the stern reality that before one can thunder through Chopin or drift moodily through Debussy, one must first become intimately acquainted with the less glamorous business of correct fingering in B major. Such is civilisation. There is something almost heroic about the honesty of the thing. The title does not attempt to seduce. It does not hint at hidden genius or promise effortless mastery in ten enjoyable steps. It simply states the facts: these are scales and arpeggios, they are for Grade 5 piano, and you will be dealing with them whether you like it or not. In an age of inflated claims and cheerful marketing nonsense, one cannot help but admire such administrative purity. And yet, within that severity, there is a strange kind of beauty. Scales and arpeggios are the plumbing of piano playing, the invisible structure beneath all the flourish. Nobody invites friends round to hear a thrilling evening of disciplined technical groundwork, and yet without that groundwork the grand performance tends to collapse into panic and wrong notes. This little volume is a reminder that music, for all its emotional grandeur, is also an elaborate system of recurring patterns that must be drilled into the fingers until they obey faster than the brain can complain. That is what gives books like this their peculiar charm. They represent the unromantic truth behind artistic accomplishment. Every glittering recital has, somewhere in its past, a weary child or teenager mechanically ascending and descending keys while a teacher says ?again? in a tone suggesting both hope and disappointment. Scales and Arpeggios ? Grade 5 ? Piano is the printed companion to that ritual. It is not here to flatter you. It is here to improve you, which is much less pleasant but ultimately more useful. As sold by Crappy Old Books, this copy is in Good condition, which feels exactly right. A scales book ought to look as though it has had a life. Not battered into despair, certainly, but handled, opened, perhaps propped on a piano stand while someone wrestled with contrary motion and tried not to take it personally. Good condition suggests a respectable survivor: used, valued, and not entirely crushed by the educational process. There is also something wonderfully ironic about second-hand music exam books. Once bought with grim purpose, possibly by a parent radiating ambition or a pupil radiating dread, they now re-emerge as curious relics of structured perseverance. Their original urgency has faded. No examiner is waiting now. No marked form is looming. The book can finally be appreciated not just as a tool of mild torment, but as an object of great institutional charm. It comes from that excellent British tradition in which cultural refinement is pursued by means of organised testing and carefully standardised booklets. And ABRSM, of course, is a world unto itself. Few organisations have done more to persuade generations that musical development should proceed via grades, syllabuses and the methodical conquering of technical obstacles. There is something both admirable and faintly terrifying about that empire of earnest improvement. This book is one of its humble foot soldiers: small, dutiful, efficient, and quietly central to the whole operation. For pianists, teachers, nostalgic former pupils, collectors of music ephemera, or anyone who enjoys the quiet comedy of books devoted entirely to disciplined repetition, this is a splendid find. It is practical, austere, oddly evocative and full of the ghostly echo of practice sessions past. You can almost hear the metronome. You can almost feel the reluctant straightening of posture. You can almost detect the moment when someone realised there was yet another minor key to memorise. So this is more than a music booklet. It is a compact monument to the truth that talent, whatever else it may be, is often built on an alarming number of scales. A small paperback of finger exercises and formal expectations, yes, but also a quiet tribute to persistence, repetition and the long British tradition of making art slightly more official than it strictly needs to be. Scales and Arpeggios ? Grade 5 ? Piano is not flashy. It is not fun in any obvious sense. But it is foundational, formidable and, in its own severe little way, rather wonderful. Condition: Good. Which is more than many candidates felt halfway through practising the left hand. Sold by Crappy Old Books. THIS BOOK BEARS THE CRAPPY OLD BOOKS STAMP. IF THAT IS UNDESIRABLE PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS.
