This classic tale of a double life was Wilde's only novel. It was a succes de scandale. Early readers were shocked by its hints at unspeakable sins and the book was later used in court in an attempt to prove Wilde's homosexual tendencies. In thisclassic tale of a double life, Dorian Gray makes a fateful wish and exchanges his soul for eternal youth, but his hidden portrait bears the marks of his debauched and cruel behaviour. Wilde's unique handling of issues such as art and morality, censorship and interpretation, deception and revelation, makes this novel very much a product of its time, but one which continues to fascinate and disturb.
À propos de l?auteur:
Born in Ireland, Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wilde (1854-1900) was educated in Dublin and Oxford and went on to become the leading and most prominent exponent of flamboyant aestheticism. As well as his novel, he wrote many plays, and several volumes of poetry and criticism. Imprisoned for homosexual acts, he died after his release in exile in Paris.
Robert Mighall has edited a selection of Wilde's poetry for Everyman and is the author of 'A Geography of Victorian Gothic Fiction' (OUP, 1999).
