Second (First Edinburgh) edition, first issue (with the Duke of Roxburgh's name misspelled "Boxburgh" on p. xxxvii, the Addenda to the subscription list at p. xlvi and the "Stinking" reading on page 263). Frontispiece portrait of Burns engraved by Beugo after Alexander Nasmyth"s drawing. With an inserted watercolour sketch by Uwins depicting the witches in the church from "Tam O'Shanter" (size 3 x 2 inches, mounted). With half title. xlviii, 10-368 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. The first affordable edition of Burns' works. The Kilmarnock Burns was published in 1786 and is rare and costly. This is the second edition, the first wth a portrait of the author, and in a handsome binding with a stellar provenance. An important edition: 27 pieces not included in the Kilmarnock are printed here for the first time. This copy from the library of Grolier Club founder Robert Hoe, bound at the Club Bindery established in New York with artisans of the highest accomplishment.
