A small calf volume of Thomas Moore's juvenile poetic publication. While the title page does not identify him, this is the work of Irish poet and lyricist Thomas Moore. First published in 1801, the pseudonym 'Thomas Little' may have been due to the juvenile eroticism of these verses. Moore's celebration of kisses and embraces skirted contemporary standards of propriety. When these standards tightened further in the Victorian era, what had until then been a publishing success was put to an end.Bears contemporary inscriptions to front pastedown, 'Henry C. Miles', along with his stamp to head of front free endpaper and title page. Previous owner's inscription to front pastedown also, 'D. L. Cumming'. In the original full calf binding. Marks to front and rear boards, small loss to leather at front board. Cracking to front and rear joints. Rubbing to spine and extremities, with loss in these areas. Inscriptions to front pastedown, both contemporary and more recent. Decorative stamp to head of front free endpaper and title page. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are foxed throughout. Good Only. The Eleventh Edition. Duodecimo. XXIV, 172 pages. Hardcover / Beautiful, decorative leather with gilt lettering and ornament on spine and boards. The little Volume now in protective Mylar. Very good condition with only minor signs of wear. The binding tight and intact. Minor signs of foxing. Poetry Foundation: "Living up to the title Anacreon Moore strained the budget of the promising young poet, but rather than accept an Irish laureateship, created for him by Atkinson and Moira, Moore published his juvenile poems as Poetical Works of the Late Thomas Little Esq. (1801), assuming a pseudonym appropriate to his short stature. The proceeds barely met his debt, but the collection of love poems further enhanced his reputation as a ladies' man. Although these light lyrics seem remarkably chaste to modern readers, the kisses and embraces they celebrate suggested much to 19th-century readers. As in Moore's later poetry the visual sense is starved in these lyrics, but they provide well for the emotional dimension. Moore later regretted publishing these poems; at the time he was as grateful for the publisher's remuneration as for the advance of his poetic reputation." Sprache: english.
