London; William Pickering, 1853. 8:o. 22,5x15 cm. Portrait plate, lxiv, 437, (1) & x, (1, 1 blank), 498 pp. Two volumes in sturdy green full leather, bound for T. Hatchard, London, with raised bands on spine, gilt decorations in compartments, on the boards and edges of the boards, and with gilt edges. Anonymous bookplate in both volumes. Spines are insiginificantly worn, and a few corners are slightly bumped. A fine set, containing a memoir of the author, and a preface by John Newton. N° de réf. du vendeur 46098

Front hinge cracked. Some gutter cracking. Large tear to rear endpaper. Moderate wear and bumping to spine, board edges and corners, with splitting to spine head. Leather Bound. Etat : Very Good. 1851. Brown 5-ribbed full leather binding, gold floral decor on spine, marbled endpapers (Double Comb, Double Nonpareil), ALL page ends gold gilt. Nice Firm Clean copy ! General wear. Slight 'leather burn' on board edge. 360 + 307 + 386 pages. William Pickering (1796-1854) was an English publisher, notable for introducing cloth binding to British publishing. Pickering began working as an antiquarian bookseller before 1820, and quickly moved into publishing. In 1819 he began publishing a series of Diamond Classics- small books set in tiny type, that were offered in a uniform binding of cloth or leather at an affordable price of 6 shillings. These are probably the first publishers' bindings in cloth- an innovation which had a rapid and profound impact on the publishing industry.
