Synopsis :

This text presents primary care information for the nurse-midwifery scope of practice, including management of primary care problems in essentially healthy women, and the management/coordination of primary care for pregnant women with significant, established medical conditions. The text covers prevention, including lifestyle changes and immunizations; screening; management of common health problems appropriate to nurse-midwifery practice; and the presentation and management of common health problems in pregnancy.

À propos des auteurs: Barbara Hackley CNM PhD has served as a faculty member at Georgetown University, Columbia University, and Yale University. Currently, she is the Director, Resiliency Initiative, and Clinical Director, Women’s Health Services for the South Bronx Health Center, a program of Montefiore Health Center and The Children’s Health Fund. In that capacity, she is responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating programming designed to foster the health and well-being of pregnant and parenting women and their children. Key elements of the Resiliency Initiative include universal screening for parental stress and support in prenatal and pediatric care, perinatal group care, intensive counseling for families in need, linkages to community resources, and maternal-infant dyadic therapy. Her textbook, Primary Care for Women: A Guide for Midwives and Women’s Health Providers, was awarded the 2008 Best Book of the year by the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) and has been used by midwifery education programs nationwide. She is the recipient of other numerous awards recognizing her teaching abilities, scholarly work, and clinical expertise in helping to expand the practice base of midwifery to include more primary and preventative care. Her current research focuses on the prevention of pregnancy-related obesity and depression and the impact of perinatal group care on mothers and children.

Jan Kriebs, CNM MSN FACNM is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences Department at the University of Maryland. She retired from the University as Director of Midwifery in 2015. She remains active professionally, serving with the CDC Elimination of Maternal Child Transmission of HIV Working Group, the Maryland Direct Entry Midwifery Advisory Committee and the CMP Committee of AMCB. She holds an adjunct position with the Philadelphia University Midwifery Program. Her current research addresses issues affecting perinatally infected young women living with HIV and their reproductive experiences. With Dr Hackley, she authored the text Primary Care for Women, which received the 2008 Best Book Award from ACNM. She is a co-author of Varney’s Midwifery,5th edition.

Mary Ellen Rousseau is a Clinical Professor and Director of the Midwifery Education Program at Yale University School of Nursing. She is a fellow in the American College of Nurse-Midwives. She continues to practice full scope midwifery care but specializes in midlife health of women.
