A propos de cet article

Description :

Two volumes bound in one, later issue. Royal quarto (35 x 29.5cm). pp. viii,178,[ii],179-284. With two titles, but paginated continuously, and without the subscriber's & plate lists. With four hand-coloured folding maps and 48 etched plates by Wood. The work was originally issued to subscribers between 1811 & 1813 and copies of that appear with usually between 155 & 158 etched plates, and four maps, although more plates are occasionally reported. Copies also, as here, occur not infrequently with the specific number of 48 etched plates, plus the four maps. A number of the standard bibliographical works noting this number of plates, and, interestingly, the Bohn catalogue of 1848 with both types of copy for sale, one with 155 (4 guineas) & one with 48 plates (2 guineas). The presence of an 1828 watermark on one of the folding maps in this copy bears out this as a later issue, the subscriber's list (in the first issue) containing 158 names, but the prospectus indicating an edition of 'no more than 250 copies', suggesting the final copies remained with the author, and were issued later, and, as observed, with fewer plates. Some occasional light foxing & offsetting. Bound in slightly later 19th C. half morocco, gilt, cloth sides & marbled endpapers. Rubbed & slighty worn, but quite sound. Vg. [Lowndes 2984; Bohn 216; Graesse 216; Alexander 999]. N° de réf. du vendeur 3962
