At age fifty, Pippa Lee seems perfectly content. The devoted wife of a successful publisher and proud mother of grown twins, a consummate hostess to the literati and an admired and trusted neighbor, her life seems to lack for nothing. But when she and her eighty-year-old husband move to a quiet retirement village, the routines and distractions that have upheld Pippa's flawless feminine persona begin to crumble away. And under the surface, her surprisingly gritty and adventurous past is beginning to break through. When Pippa finds herself acting out strange yearnings in her sleep, she gradually allows the voice of her lost self to come through into her consciousness, recounting a wild and reckless youth full of experimentation and heartbreak, passion and guilt. We learn how she ran away from home to escape the manic-depression of her pill-popping mother, only to fall into drugs herself among the loose New York art crowd. Leaving a trail of broken hearts and messy affairs behind her, it is only when she meets the older Herb that she discovers her longing for security and resolves to steal him from his wife in order to settle down and create a family of her own. Written with quirky humor, intelligence and compassion, The Private Lives of Pippa Lee is a wise and acute portrait of the many lives behind a single name.…

Revue de presse
"Miller is a luminous writer . . . gazing into these multiple private Pippas is like opening a series of Russian dolls, each intricately wrought, self-contained and self-revealing." (Observer 2008-04-06)
"A beautifully layered and subtle novel of identity, with a wonderfully vivid sense of place and character. And it's hesitatingly wise in all sorts of ways, as well as being a deftly constructed page-turner." (JOSEPH O'CONNOR)
"Poignant, funny and wise" (Financial Times)
"Miller writes with a natural poetic flair that's considered and free from affectation." (Easy Living 2008-05-01)
"Like Jonathan Franzen's The Corrections without the bitterness, mixed with Jeffrey Eugenides's The Virgin Suicides without the eccentricity, The Private Lives of Pippa Lee is a thoroughly enjoyable and engrossing read" (Sunday Telegraph 2008-04-06)
"With beautiful simplicity, Miller unravels Pippa's past and celebrates the stirrings of something new." (Good Housekeeping Book of the Month 2008-05-01)
"Miller's prose is always sharp and visual without being overly descriptive. All of the descriptions, whether of people, places or emotions manage to be both prosaic and evocative... Although it had come to a natural and perfectly timed conclusion, I could happily have read much more about Pippa Lee and her secret lives." (Irish Sunday Independent 2008-03-30)
"Miller's prose is tight and compelling; it moves in its own fast rhythm, richly packed with images that slice open the text . . . revealing the dark waters beneath." (The Times 2008-05-03)
"This compulsively readable novel shows real insight into the lives - and roles - of women. Miller writes with a rare mix of warmth, veracity and barbed wit." (Waterstone's Books Quarterly)
"There is on every page a glint of verbal beauty like a jewel, and Miller's characters are so keenly observed as to be almost painful to read about. The novel's wit and glamour make it one of the best debuts of the year so far." (Literary Review 2008-05-01)
"An elegant and trenchant study of roles and reinvention." (Tatler 2008-07-01)
"A gripping story of romantic entaglement" (Red)
"Miller writes particularly well about the complexities of mother-daughter love... excellent and moving" (Guardian)
"Miller's astute, beautifully nuanced novel explores the unpredictable consequences of choosing to live a safe, but emotionally compromised, life." (Daily Mail)
"As the extraordinary details of her early life are retold, Pippa is revealed as a woman of many contradictions, thrillingly flawed" (Psychologies) --India Knight
"With fabulous writing, a brilliant tale of an adoring housewife struggling to hide her shady past from her oh-so-perfect neighbours" (In Style) --In Style
"Has all the wit and pace of Desperate Housewives" (Eva Must Read) --Eva Must Read
