Before Strachey, biographies were typically massive, multi-volume "monuments" of praise. Strachey did something entirely different: he wrote a concise, witty, and deeply Lytton Strachey was a key member of the Bloomsbury Group (alongside Virginia Woolf), and he brought their modernist, skeptical energy to history. The "New Biography": Strachey moved away from dry lists of dates and events. Instead, he used irony, "wicked" wit, and storytelling techniques more common in novels. Psychological Insight: He was fascinated by the motives behind the Queen's actions—her temper as a child, her intense (and sometimes suffocating) devotion to Prince Albert, and her late-life obsession with rituals. The "Human" Victoria: He famously described her as "the Grandmother of Europe," capturing both her regal power and her middle-class domestic habits. Strachey focuses heavily on how Prince Albert essentially "managed" the Queen. He portrays Victoria as a woman who was naturally impulsive and poorly educated, but who became a polished monarch under Albert's strict, intellectual guidance. A significant portion of the book covers the 40 years Victoria spent as a widow. Strachey highlights her "idolatry" of Albert—how she kept his rooms exactly as they were, with hot water brought in every morning for a man who had been dead for decades. *** FREE SHIPPUNG within contiguous U.S. ***.…
