DL consignment. Shelved in Case 2. Stephen Crane was born on November 1, 1871 in Newark, NJ. One of eight children to survive past infancy, Crane's early life was filled with loss, losing his sister-in-law, two nephews, and his sister by 1884. Crane took an early interest in writing, writing his first known story by 14. He would enroll at Claverack College, a quasi-military school where he would gain inspiration for his magnum opus. That experience, together with a fascination with the Civil War cultivated on the pages of "Century Magazine", would produce "The Red Badge of Courage". "The Red Badge of Courage" released in 1895 to critical acclaim, many noting its realistic portrayal of war and those in the midst of fighting them. Among the novel's initial detractors were veterans of the Civil War who found it to be a satire of their experiences. "The Red Badge of Courage" was not at first a bestseller in the States, selling extremely well in England, earning comparisons to Tolstoy and Victor Hugo. "The Red Badge of Courage" has earned several film adaptations, the most prominent being a 1951 film of the same name which was greatly shortened for release, much to director John Huston's dislike. 1387827.
