A propos de cet article

*HONE, William; CRUIKSHANK, George; and others. SIX REGENCY POLITICAL SATIRES, 1819–1820, including The Political House that Jack Built; The Palace of John Bull; The Man in the Moon; The Queen that Jack Found; The Queen’s Matrimonial Ladder; and The Political “A, Apple-Pie”.* London, 1819–1820. Six separately published illustrated political pamphlets bound together in handsome later burgundy cloth, boards gilt ruled and spine lettered in gilt Political House that Jack Built &c. Octavo. An unusually coherent collection documenting the extraordinary flowering of popular political satire surrounding Peterloo, George IV and the Queen Caroline affair. Contents: William Hone, The Political House that Jack Built, London, William Hone, 1819, thirty-sixth edition, with thirteen cuts by George Cruikshank, the celebrated radical parody first issued in the aftermath of Peterloo; The Palace of John Bull, Contrasted with the Poor “House that Jack Built”, London, G. Greenland / G. Hazard, 1820, apparently the first edition, a comparatively scarce anti-radical rejoinder to Hone; William Hone, The Man in the Moon, London, William Hone, 1820, fourteenth edition, with fifteen cuts; The Queen that Jack Found, London, John Fairburn, 1820, eighth edition, with thirteen cuts; William Hone, The Queen’s Matrimonial Ladder, London, William Hone, 1820, twenty-first edition, with fourteen step scenes and eighteen other cuts; and William Hone, The Political “A, Apple-Pie”; or, The “Extraordinary Red Book” Versified, London, J. Johnston, 1820, fifth edition, called for with twenty-three cuts but this copy incomplete, lacking five cuts. The apparently extraordinary edition numbers are themselves important evidence of the phenomenal contemporary popularity of these cheaply produced satires, many of which passed through numerous editions within a single year. Hone, celebrated following his successful 1817 defence against prosecutions for blasphemous and seditious libel, became one of the most effective radical publishers of the Regency period, while the illustrations produced by the young George Cruikshank for these publications were instrumental in establishing his reputation as a political caricaturist. The group spans the political repercussions of Peterloo in 1819 and the intense popular agitation surrounding Queen Caroline in 1820, providing an unusually concentrated primary record of radical and counter-radical print culture. Early ownership inscriptions to several title-pages and an earlier manuscript contents list to the front endpapers. Very good indeed overall: pages generally nice and clean, with occasional age-related marks, wear, spotting and foxing; binding nice and firm and presenting very well; The Political “A, Apple-Pie” incomplete as noted. Now housed in an easily removable clear acetate cover. Stock code 004195. Location: Bookroom. …
