A propos de cet article

8vo, engraved frontispiece after H. Richter, and pp. xxvii, [i], 229; a bit foxed but otherwise a good copy in contemporary (possibly original) plum-coloured cloth, a little worn. First and only edition. John Minter Morgan (1782-1854) inherited a fortune when a young man, and dedicated his life to furthering the co-operative movement, and principles derived from Robert Owen. This is a highly political poem, with a provocative preface: the verse itself discusses the unjust distribution of wealth, the state of political economy, 'corrupted Christianity', Owen's system, and the position of the monarch in relation to politics. A whole section (pp. 73-99) concentrates on contemporary poets, in particular that of Shelley: Morgan says in a footnote that 'there is not a more gratifying proof of the improving taste and liberality of the sage, than that which is manifested by the rising fame of Percy Bysshe Shelley' (p. 77n). He also praises Campbell, Coleridge, Moore and Southey - although, oddly, he concentrates only on Southey's early utopianism, not on his more recent (and quite evident) support for the status quo. Wordsworth receives significant praise (with a footnote of two quotations from The Excursion): 'As some great spirit, ere it wings its way Beyond the precincts of the fleeting day, To kindred minds imparts the heavenly flame - Leaves, though unconscious of enduring fame, A trail of glory in the path sublime, To mark its triumph o'er the bounds of time' (p. 84). …
