Johannes Kromayer war ein deutscher Historiker, der klassische Philogie und alte Geschichte studierte. Er war u. a. als Gymnasiallehrer tätig und unternahm einige Forschungsreisen, um anike Schlachtfelder zu erkunden. Seine Arbeiten zur antiken Kriegsgeschichte, wie auch das vorliegende Werk, ergeben sich aus schriftlichen Überlieferungen und aus Kronmayers eigenen Untersuchungen der historischen Schauplätze.
