His was a hand- some gift but an unremarkable one. The really startling collection, the Rus- kin Gallery, is just around the corner. John Ruskin's collection for Sheffield was never actually given to the city and still belongs to his Guild of St George. As a realistic project the Guild must be counted a failure. Probably Ruskin never quite believed he could found an ideal society anywhere in Britain, but nineteenth-century Sheffield, with its craft traditions, slums, smoke and inequalities must have seemed the place to start.
