Item description from seller

Original printed green paper covered boards with green cloth spine 19x28cm. Printed in 1923 by the Government Press in a run of 400 copies. IV, 37, (1)pp, (8)pp containing 16 b/w photos, 1 b/w folding Key Map, and 5 folding colour maps and sections (Plates I-V) all present as called for. Covers fair only, marked, damp stained, with presentation plate to the front. Interiors good, lightly rippled and creased, with sheets neatly folded and very good. The plate reads: "Presented to the University of Reading from the library of John Walter Gregory, 1936", with his name inscribed. Gregory (1864-1932) was best known for his work on the East African Rift Valleys, Australia, and glacial geology. This report describes Beadnell's "purely economic" investigation into the region's oil potential during October 1922 to March 1923. He based himself at Qoseir, which as a major phosphate centre had weekly camel postal, a private motor service, a telegraph office 100km distant, a steamer service, provisions (prices considerably above Nile Valley towns), and Bedouin camel transport and drivers via the Ababda Sheikh. Owing to lack of rain most water wells were dry. Previous exploration in the area was not extensive. The rest of the report describes topography, water supplies, and geology. Beadnell concludes by recommending exploration between Qoseir and Hurghada, though the risk of failure is great, and not recommended to smaller capital limited companies. The Key Map is on a 1/2M scale. Plates I-IV show the area in sections on a 1/100K scale (Qoseir - Wadi Um Ghaig - Wadi Shagra - Wadi el Ghadi - Wadi Ranga). Plate V contains 8 Geological Sections Across the Coastal Plain. The photos present panoramic views. (OCLC 7490589).
