This is an original government printed document from 1807 : "Report of the Secretary of War on the Petition of Peter Gansevoort, Junior, of the State of New York Referred to Him on the Seventh Instant" -- December 11, 1807 -- City of Washington: A. & G. Way, Printers -- 1807. The document touches on the postwar careers of two individuals who were heroes of the American Revolutionary War.

Peter Gansevoort was a Colonel in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. He was also the maternal Grandfather of the great novelist Herman Melville. He is most remembered as successfully leading the defense of Fort Stanwix (Near Rome NY) against troops led by British Officer Barry St. Leger in his siege of the fort. St. Leger's three-week-long siege was interrupted by the Battle of Oriskany, in which St. Leger had no choice but to participate. That had allowed Gansevoort, who previously had directed the reconstruction of the mostly ruined fort, to make a sortie against St. Leger's troops. The siege was lifted and Gansevoort found himself receiving the thanks of Congress, and a personal observation from John Adams that, "Gansevoort has proven that it is possible to hold a fort."

After the war he served as Sheriff of Albany County, and Commissioner of Indian Affairs, continued to support the militia, and serve as quartermaster to said militia. Gansevoort acquired property near Albany, ran a family brewery and a sawmill. The hamlet of Gansevoort, New York is named after him. This document refers to the time that Gansevoort served as Military Agent for the Northern Department of the united States. The assignation to that position was made by Thomas Jefferson in 1802. Peter Gansevoort was made a Brigadier General in 1809. He partook in local affairs until his death in 1812.

The document, which, aside from the exterior title, consists of a single page of printed text by Henry Dearborn (1751 - 1829), who was Secretary of War in the Presidential administration of Thomas Jefferson (1801 - 1809). He was the fifth Secretary of War. In the Revolutionary War he served under Benedict Arnold on the failed invasion of Quebec. Later he served s part of General Washington's staff, and was present at the British surrender at Yorktown. Early in the war he fought in the Battle of Bunker Hill. During the War of 1812, Dearborn was the Senior American Military Officer. He also served as Ambassador to Portugal and in the United States House of Representatives.

In this "Report" We see that he was acting in the official capacity of Secretary of War; but we also see that he ended the Report, signing off with Henry Dearborn - The honorable the speaker of the house of Representatives.

CONDITION -- GOOD PLUS -- This Report has signs of having been dis-bound from a more extensive volume (binding thread holes are visible along the spine fold ). There are three penciled annotations that indicate it to have been part of a collection. (at the top of the front is penciled what I consider to be a catalog number.) The paper is considerably toned, weathered, and foxed. The spine fold is a bit abraded, with splitting to extremities; edges have scattered nicking; fore-edge corner tips are bumped with accompanying creasing, and dog-eared to the bottom tip. Also visible are one crease from being folded at the center horizontally. Two diagonal creases can be seen near the top of the leaflet. Else the leaflet is clean and presentable, being museum quality in appearance.
