You planned the money. Nobody warned you about the Mondays.
Two thirds of workers feel financially ready to retire. Barely half feel emotionally prepared, and almost nobody tells them why. The seminars cover pensions and drawdown rates and leave the real questions for the drive home: What do I actually do all day? Who am I when nobody needs my job title? Why does a life I worked forty years to reach sometimes feel like being politely deleted?
Retired, Not Finished is the book for everything the financial planning left out.
Written by an author in the middle of his own phased retirement after thirty-nine years with one employer, this is a plain-spoken, occasionally funny, always honest field guide to the parts of retirement nobody puts on a pension statement: the identity, the routine, the friendships, and the sense of being needed that a job quietly supplied for decades and takes with it on the last day.
Inside, you will find the Five Hidden Paychecks, the framework at the heart of the book, showing exactly what your job was paying you besides money, and a practical, chapter-by-chapter plan for replacing every one of them on your own terms. You will meet the honeymoon phase and learn why it reliably fades around month four, and the slump that follows it, which is not a sign anything has gone wrong but the starting gun for the real work. You will find an entire chapter on the guilt of resting on an ordinary Tuesday afternoon, the quiet, near-universal feeling that you should be doing something, where it comes from, and how to finally retire it along with the job. You will find honest, practical chapters on rebuilding your sense of self without a job title, redesigning your week so freedom stops feeling like drift, renegotiating your marriage or partnership once you are suddenly home, rebuilding a social life the workplace used to arrange for free, working again on your own terms if you want to, spending the money you spent a lifetime saving without the flinch, and protecting your time from the quiet assumption that retired now means available to everyone.
Every chapter closes with two simple tools: On Paper, a short set of honest written prompts, and This Week, one concrete action to take before you turn the page again. No worksheets, no vision boards, no forced positivity. Just a clear map of the territory from someone walking it in real time, and a plan for building a retirement that gets better, not thinner, with every year that follows.
This book is for you if:
- You are within a few years of retiring and want to prepare for the life, not just the finances
- You have already retired and something feels flatter or emptier than you expected
- You are searching for a thoughtful, non-financial retirement gift for a parent, spouse, colleague, or friend
- You have read the cheerful retirement books and wanted something more honest
A gift for the person approaching this chapter, not just the one already in it.
If someone in your life is retiring soon, a parent, a spouse, an older sibling, a colleague marking their last day, this book makes a genuinely useful gift precisely because it is not a card or a bottle of wine that gets used once and forgotten. It is the conversation nobody else is willing to start with them, handed over in a form they can read privately, at their own pace, and return to for years. Give it instead of, or alongside, the traditional retirement gift, and you will very likely be the only person who gave them something that helped.
The years ahead are not an epilogue to the life you already built. They are the next chapter, and this book exists to help you write it.
You planned the money. Now plan the life. Scroll up, click buy, and let the years ahead be the ones you built on purpose.
Retired, not finished. Your next chapter starts on page one.

Description de la boutique
We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first visit or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free. There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours that we are yet to explore, which is why we will forever inspire curious minds.…
