A propos de cet article

Bifolium (approx. 20½" x 15"), text in 6 columns; previous folds in quarters; generally very good. Much of the first page is taken up with patent medicine advertisements, but also with ads for the 7th edition of Bowditch, steamboat schedules, etc. Other articles include ship arrivals, election notices, tax notices, accounts from the General Assembly, and assorted advertisements and poetry. On page 2 is printed a three-plus column letter of endorsement for the Rev. E. K. Avery, accused of murdering Sarah Cornell. "Thou recollectest how the infidel judge several times stopped the mouth of brother Bristed - thus putting a veto on the Lord's annointed, because he delivered himself of much wrath against the infidels of Fall River who went to Bristol to nab thy Rev. self 'at unawares' and to make you submit to all the indignities of an infidel tribunal, only because thou didst murder Miss Cornell, a member of your church, as if thou hadst not the divine right to dispose of thy flock agreeably to thy holy will and pleasure." In December of 1832, the body of a young pregnant woman was found hanging at a Tiverton, Rhode Island farm. She was identified as Sarah Cornell, a worker in a textile factory in nearby Fall River, Massachusetts. Evidence implicated Methodist minister Ephraim Avery and the community was outraged that a man of the cloth had seduced and murdered an innocent mill girl. Avery was acquitted, but could not return to the pulpit, and eventually removed to Ohio. Accompanied by: The Rhode Island Republican, Volume 24, no. 38. Wednesday morning, November 27, 1833 containing a 3-column rejoinder to the above, signed "Philo Rationis." Bifolium (approx. 20½" x 15"), text in 6 columns; some tears in the gutter and top margin of the first leaf (loss of a letter or two but sense remains clear), previous folds in quarters; good. Accompanied by: The Rhode Island Republican, Volume 24, no. 39. Wednesday morning, December 4, 1833 containing a front-page ad for Strictures on the Case of Ephriam K. Avery, originally published in the Republican Herald of Providence by Aristides, for sale at W. Callahan's; plus a notice on p. 3 of A Fac-simile of the Letters produced on the Trial of Rev. E. K. Avery on an endictment before the Supreme Court of Rhode Island, for sale by Davil Melvill, at his store." Bifolium (approx. 20½" x 15"), text in 6 columns; previous folds in quarters; very good.…
