Externally good to very good, internally fair to good. Includes 40 engraved plates by Dore and 20 by Paton, the latter printed in sepia ink. Of the Dore plates, three of the original plates have been replaced by copies mounted on replacement pages that are a bit darker than the original leaves. The binding is the showstopper here, a later binding, likely mid 20th century, full brown fine grained leather with the cloth from the original front cover trimmed and laid onto the front board, gilt spine lettering and ruling, about 13.5 inches tall. The binding has some very modest edgewear and some fading to the outer edges of the rear cover as well as the spine, good hinges, firm text block, closed tears to the bottom margins of some pages, moderate foxing throughout, the heaviest affecting the first few pages, gift notation in pencil dated 1889 on preliminary blank, no other markings.
