This historical novel by George Eliot is set in 15th Florence against the backdrop of the political and religious upheaval following the death of Lorenzo de' Medici. The narrative follows the intellectual and moral development of the protagonist, Romola de' Bardi. This Tauchnitz edition, published in the same year as the first London edition, facilitated the rapid dissemination of Eliot's work to English-speaking travellers and readers across Continental Europe. Two Volumes bound in one.
Good Condition. Vellum bound with red painted motif to front board. Red text block edges. Previous owner inscription to front free end paper dated 1889. Binding is firm and contents are lightly tanned and spotted. Boards have some wear with darking to edges and light staining to front board. Spine has more notable chipping, with some faded lettering.
