A propos de cet article

BOHR, Aage AND Ben Mottelson. "Rotational States in Even-Even Nuclei" in Physical Review, American Institute of Physics, NY, 1953, volume 90, n. 4, pp 717-719, 15 May 1953. Offered in the full issue of pp 503-725. Original wrappers. Near-fine copy. Nobel Prize effort. [++] Bohr shared the 1975 Nobel Prize in Physics with Mottelson and fellow Manhattan Project veteran Leo James Rainwater for the discovery of the connection between collective motion and particle motion in atomic nuclei and the development of the theory of the structure of the atomic nucleus based on this connection".--Nobel Foundation [++] "The exploration of nuclear structure over the last quarter century has been a rich experience for those who have had the privilege to participate. As the nucleus has been subjected to more and more penetrating probes, it has continued to reveal unexpected facets and to open new perspectives. The preparation of our talks today has been an occasion for Ben Motelson and myself to relive the excitement of this period and to recall the interplay of so many ideas and discoveries coming from the worldwide community of nuclear physicists, as well as the warmth of the personal relations that have been involved. In this development, the study of rotational motion has had a special role. Because of the simplicity of this mode of excitation and the many quantitative relations it implies, it has been an important testing ground for many of the general ideas on nuclear dynamics, Indeed, the response to rotational motion has played a prominent role in the development of dynamical concepts ranging from celestial mechanics to the spectra of elementary particles."--Rotational Motion in Nuclei, Nobel Lecture, Aage Bohr, 11 December 1975 [++] "The collective model, developed by the three men, was a unification of the shell model with the liquid-drop model, which had been proposed by Aage Bohr's father, Niels, in 1936. (Niels Bohr, of course, was also a Nobel laureate in physics, in 1922, "for his services in the investigation of the structure of atoms and of the radiation from them.") The elder Bohr, as a young graduate student in 1905, had written a prize-winning paper on the vibration of liquid drops of water. Seventy years later his son is being honored for work growing out of the liquid-drop picture. The prize of $143 000, to be shared equally by Bohr, Mottelson and Rain- water, is to be awarded on 10 December in Stockholm. Bohr is director of the Niels Bohr Institute. Mottelson is professor at NORDITA, the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Nuclear Physics which shares quarters with the Bohr Institute in Copenhagen. Rainwater I professor of physics at Columbia University." --Physics Today, December 1975, 28/12, p 69.…
