A propos de cet article

an original flying log book (with approximately 67 filled pages) running from March 1942 to November 1944 outlining the training and service of a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force, Peter Gill Broadbent, who was based in England from April 1943. The log book, a clothbound notebook with date, hour, aircraft type and number, pilot, duty remarks (including results of bombing, gunnery, exercises, etc.) and flying times, arranged over ruled, double pages, contains details of his service history as well as certifications acquired during the first seven months of training in Canada.Peter qualified in June 1942 as an ‘Air Observer/Navigator’, as a ‘Bomb Aimer’ and ‘Air Gunner’ in July of the same year, and as an ‘Astro Navigator’ in September 1942. During his training he flew with different pilots completing day time and night time hours of practice, primarily over Manitoba, as well as Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia. During these months, usually flying in Ansons or Battles, Peter records a few words about the flights, sometimes charting the course of the flights, other times notes about the success of the exercise, the number of bombs dropped or the weather. All columns are always filled in along with total flying hours for each month and the signing off by the CSO. There are no records from December 1942 until April 1943 when he is stationed in R. A. F. Thornaby (one of the tens of thousands from Canada’s Air Force who served with the British in WWII), the following month including the name of the squadron he is stationed with, the No. 24 Squadron. The 24th squadron served in the second world war primarily as a transport and communication squadron, Broadbent later on makes occasional notes of passengers (such as Lord Swinton or Lord Trenchard). During his time in Britain he mostly flew in Wellingtons, as well as Hudsons, Lockheeds and Ansons. For August 1943 – April 1944 he serves as a navigator, flying with F/LT. Taiber (presumed to be Flight Lieutenant Taiber (1909 – 1973) from the Czechoslovak Air Force), usually between Belfast, Nutts Corner, Hendon, and occasionally to Gibraltar. He made few flights in May and June with two different pilots before becoming navigator for Flight Lieutenant Puda (1912 – 2002, also from the Czech Air Force) for the majority of his remaining recorded journeys. In September 1943 he’s transferred to the Metropolitan Communication Squadron where he remains until the logbook ends on 15th November 1944. Approximately 68 pages filled". Bound in blue cloth with titles printed on front board, name written in blue ink, pages printed with rules and titles. 20 x 14 cm. Book in good condition, wear and what appears to be watermarks to boards which are slightly bowed, corners scuffed, occasional light marks to pages but handwriting neat and readable.…
