A propos de cet article

Matching five volume set, with "A Selection of Irish Melodies" comprising the first four volumes, and "A Selection of National Airs" comprising the fifth volume. Folio, 13 in. x 10 in. Unpaginated. No title page, table of contents, or index in any volume. Every song in the five volumes presents its own full-size title page (with blank verso) that cites the song's title, the book's title, and the publisher of that one song. Song title pages each include the text: "Arranged with Symphonies and Accompaniment by [name of song's arranger]." The title page is followed by a two to six page musical score. Individual songs are separately paginated (e.g. pp. 1-7), except as noted below. Each volume contains about 25 songs. At mid-book in Volume I, a title page is presented: "A Selection of Irish Melodies with Symphonies & Accompaniments by Henry R. Bishop and Characteristic Words by Thomas Moore Esq." published by J. Powers, London. This title page has an engraving of an Irish castle with a sailing vessel and stormy sky. At the base is written "10th Number" and "Price 15/-". This internal title page is followed by pp. 59-145. Full calf with decorative gilt frames to front and back. Gilt title and five raised bands with gilt bandlines to spine. Gilt edges and dentelles. Light rubbing to boards. Marbled endpapers. Inner joint repairs to Volume I have been hand-colored to match the marbling. "Bound by Hering, 3 Newman St." to upper corner of the verso of free front endpaper on all volumes. Armorial bookplate to front pastedown of all volumes. Light age-toning to pages. Spine labels read: "Irish Melodies, Part I," Irish Melodies, Part II," "Irish Melodies, Part III," "Irish Melodies, Part IV," and "National Airs, Part II" The bookplate is that of "William Arthur, Sixth Duke of Portland, K.G." William John Arthur Charles James Cavendish-Bentinck, 6th Duke of Portland, (1857 - 1943), known as William Cavendish-Bentinck until 1879, was a British landowner, courtier, and Conservative politician. He notably served as Master of the Horse between 1886 and 1892 and again between 1895 and 1905. Thomas Moore (1779 - 1852), was an Irish writer, poet, and lyricist celebrated for his Irish Melodies. His setting of English-language verse to old Irish tunes marked the transition in popular Irish culture from Irish to English. Politically, Moore was recognised in England as a press, or "squib", writer for the aristocratic Whigs; in Ireland he was accounted a Catholic patriot. Moore was in no doubt that the Irish Melodies would be "the only work of my pen [.] whose fame (thanks to the sweet music in which it is embalmed) may boast a chance of prolonging its existence to a day much beyond our own".
