A propos de cet article

Group of four volumes of ‘Diplomatic Correspondence’ from 1861 to 1863, each signed by Edwin L Stanton, likely the son of Lincoln’s Secretary of War, Edwin Stanton. Pencil notation in back says ‘Secretary of War Edwin Stanton’s Set’, but that is not confirmed. Two of the books contain text as part of Lincoln’s State of the Union address to congress (or equivalent for that time) and then what is called ‘Papers Relating to Foreign Affairs’, which includes a substantial amount of articles or messages related to dealings with foreign countries. Each is organized by country. Fascinating insight into how Lincoln’s team was working and dealing with foreign countries during the civil war. Book 1 - 1861: Message of the President of the United States to the Two Houses of Congress at the Commencement of the Second Session of the Thirty-Seventh Congress. Volume 1. Washington: Government Printing Office. 1861. 9 1/4” x 6 1/4”. 914 pages. Includes Lincoln’s address to congress along with ‘List of Papers Relating to Foreign Affairs’ and a report from the Secretary of the Interior. Quarter leather, with gilt lettering on spine, front board detached. Marbled edges. Note in the back that this is “Secretary of War Edwin Stanton’s Set”. Book 2 - 1862: Message of the President of the United States to the Two Houses of Congress at the Commencement of the Third Session of the Thirty-Seventh Congress. Volume 1. Washington: Government Printing Office. 1862. 9 1/4” x 6 1/4”. 910 pages. Includes Lincoln’s address to congress along with ‘Papers Relating to Foreign Affairs’. Quarter leather, with gilt lettering on spine, front board detached. Marbled edges. Date on signature cut off. Book 3 and 4 - 1863 Part 1 and 2: Papers relating to Foreign Affairs, Accompanying the Annual Message of the President to the First Session of the Thirty-Eighth Congress. Part 1 and 2. Washington: Government Printing Office. 1864. 9 1/4” x 6 1/4”. 1400 pages. Quarter leather, with gilt lettering on spine. Marbled edges. Inscription in pencil reads “For Mr. Stanton From his friend E.D. Webster”.…
