About the Book:- The Sanskrit text of the Buddha-Karita was Published at the beginning of last year in the ÔAnecdota Oxoniensia,Õ and the following English translation is now included in the series of ÔSacred Books of the EastÕ. It is an early Sanskrit poem written in India on the legendary history of Buddha and therefore contains much that is of interest for the history of Buddhism, beside its special importance as illustrating the early history of classical Sanskrit literature. First part contain: Buddha-Karita of asvaghosa and second part contains: Longer Sukhavati-vyuha, Shorter Sukhavati-vyuha, Vagrakkhedika, the longer pragna-paramita hridaya-sutra, the shorter pragna-paramita hridaya sutra and Amitayur dhyana-sutra. About the Author:-Friedrich Max M ller (1823 Ð1900) was a German-born philologist and Orientalist, who lived and studied in Britain for most of his life. He was one of the founders of the western academic disciplines of Indian studies and religious studies ('science of religion', German: Religionswissenschaft). M ller wrote both scholarly and popular works on the subject of Indology. The Sacred Books of the East, a 50-volume set of English translations, was prepared under his direction. Edward Byles Cowell, FBA (23 January 1826 Ð 9 February 1903) was a noted translator of Persian poetry and the first professor of Sanskrit at Cambridge University. Cowell was born in Ipswich, the son of Charles Cowell and Marianne Byles. Elizabeth "Beth" Cowell, the painter, was his sister. He became interested in Oriental languages at the age of fifteen, when he found a copy of Sir William Jones's works (including his Persian Grammar) in the public library. Self-taught, he began translating and publishing Hafez within the year. He was made an honorary member of the German Oriental Society (DMG) in 1895, was awarded the Royal Asiatic Society's first gold medal in 1898, and in 1902 became a founding member of the British Academy.
