What happens when the Gospel confronts a culture’s deepest moral customs?

In the heart of nineteenth-century Kerala, India, society was bound by Sambandham—a loose, caste-based arrangement that stripped marriage of covenant, fidelity, and holiness. It was a system that blurred the lines between privilege and oppression, ritual and immorality. Into this complex world came Christian missionaries armed not with power, but with the transforming truth of God’s Word.

Through Scripture, education, and the lived example of covenantal families, these men and women proclaimed a radical message:
Marriage is not a social contract—it is a sacred covenant before God.

Drawing from original historical records, missionary correspondence, and contemporary scholarship, Sambandham vs The Biblical Marriage traces how the Gospel reshaped Kerala’s moral and social landscape. It reveals how the Biblical understanding of marriage—as a lifelong union between one man and one woman, grounded in love, faithfulness, and divine purpose—challenged the very foundations of caste and privilege.

From the early work of Rev. Benjamin Bailey, Rev. Charles Mead, and Rev. Henry Baker Sr., to the rise of indigenous believers who lived out their new faith amid opposition, this book tells a story of moral courage, cultural reform, and divine grace. It also explores the Channar (Nadar) Reformation, the Travancore Nayar Act of 1925, and the gradual dismantling of Sambandham through Christian teaching and example.

But beyond the historical record lies a greater truth—
that only the Gospel of Jesus Christ can transform hearts, restore families, and rebuild societies.

This book invites readers to see Kerala’s moral awakening not as a colonial byproduct, but as a redemptive encounter between divine truth and human culture—a testimony to how God’s covenant love can redeem even the darkest corners of history.
