A propos de cet article

P. T. Deutermann?s Scorpion in the Sea is a naval thriller built around one of the sea?s least comforting ideas: something hostile is out there, it is probably underwater, and the ocean is being its usual helpful self by hiding nearly everything. The Cold War may be cooling, shifting, muttering about new realities and trying on different paperwork, but warships still have crews, submarines still have teeth, and the Atlantic has not signed any agreement to become less vast. The story follows the uneasy business of tracking danger at sea, where suspicion travels faster than certainty and every sonar contact arrives with a small cloud of dread attached. Deutermann knows the naval world well enough to make the machinery feel lived-in: ships, commands, procedures, officers, signals, tactics, watch rotations, pressure, weather, politics and the peculiar institutional calm of people preparing for disaster while using acronyms. Everyone is professional, which is reassuring, until one remembers that professionalism is often what people are doing immediately before things explode. There is a scorpion loose in the water, metaphorically speaking, and the phrase is just right. A scorpion does not need to be large to ruin your afternoon. It waits, hides, strikes, and generally makes the environment feel less recreational. The sea in this book is not the holiday sea, not the blue postcard sea, not the ?let us eat chips near a pier? sea. It is the military sea: dark, deep, secretive, full of signals, shadows, engines, weapons and men trying to read danger through instruments while pretending the instruments are enough. Deutermann?s trick is to make naval suspense feel procedural and paranoid at the same time. The drama is not simply ?ship meets enemy, bangs occur.? It is uncertainty, interpretation, chain of command, imperfect information, and the slow tightening of a situation that may already be worse than anyone can prove. At sea, even panic has to observe protocol. There are orders to follow, reports to make, risks to weigh, and always the knowledge that the other side may be doing the same thing with equal seriousness and worse intentions. The irony of modern naval warfare is that it is fantastically technical and still deeply primitive. Steel, radar, sonar, missiles, computers and trained crews all boil down to the ancient unpleasantness of hunting and being hunted. The ocean makes philosophers of nobody. It simply provides darkness, distance and enough room for mistakes to become international incidents. In Scorpion in the Sea , the machinery is modern, but the fear is old-fashioned and fully operational. For readers of naval thrillers, Cold War leftovers, submarine suspense, Tom Clancy-adjacent hardware tension, and books where a blip on a screen can ruin several officers? digestion, this is very much the thing. It has the military detail, the sea-room tension, the command anxiety and the satisfying sense that somewhere below the surface something is making plans without permission. As New copy, as sold by Crappy Old Books. Alarmingly fresh for a book about salt water, suspicion and naval unpleasantness. No obvious signs of deck wear, sonar stress or having been dropped in the bilges; just a sharp copy of a sea thriller ready to sit on the shelf looking calm, which is exactly what suspicious vessels do before the trouble starts.…
