A propos de cet article

Scotland Yard (1957) by Harold Scott ? Penguin Books ISBN: None Condition: Good Published: 1957 Offered by: Crappy Old Books There was a time when British policing was conducted by stern gentlemen in dark uniforms, detectives wore respectable suits, and the successful investigation of a murder apparently depended upon an excellent memory, a reliable notebook and the ability to look suspiciously at somebody while smoking a pipe. Welcome to Scotland Yard , Harold Scott?s fascinating examination of Britain?s most famous police institution, published by Penguin in 1957, when London?s criminal underworld was still considered sufficiently alarming without the additional complications of cybercrime, identity theft and criminals operating from the comfort of their bedrooms. Sir Harold Scott was no casual observer of police affairs. Having served as Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police from 1945 to 1953, he was exceptionally well placed to explain the workings of an organisation whose name had become internationally synonymous with criminal investigation, detection and the occasional unfortunate failure to apprehend a particularly enterprising villain. Scotland Yard occupied a special place in the British imagination. It was the home of celebrated detectives, complicated investigations and the reassuring conviction that somewhere in London a determined inspector was examining a set of fingerprints while announcing that the murderer had made one fatal mistake. Reality, naturally, was rather less theatrical. Scott?s account provides an insider?s perspective on the organisation, responsibilities and traditions of the Metropolitan Police, examining the complicated business of maintaining law and order in one of the world?s great cities. From ordinary police duties to the more specialised activities of criminal investigation, the book offers an intriguing glimpse into the machinery of British policing during the middle of the twentieth century. Published in 1957, it is particularly interesting as a historical document. Britain was emerging from post-war austerity, organised crime was evolving, and policing was beginning to encounter technological and social changes that would transform the profession in subsequent decades. There were no mobile phones, computerised criminal databases or automatic number plate recognition systems. Detectives were expected to investigate crimes through interviews, observation, forensic examination and the occasional inspired deduction. Whether all this produced better policing is debatable, but it certainly provided excellent material for crime novelists. Condition: Good. A respectable vintage Penguin paperback showing the ordinary signs of age, handling and previous ownership. A survivor from the era of traditional British policing, when the Flying Squad was considerably more famous than the average police press office. Naturally, there is no ISBN . In 1957, booksellers somehow managed without international numbering systems, while police officers were expected to identify suspicious individuals through methods rather more complicated than scanning a barcode. Offered by Crappy Old Books , where vintage crime literature is welcomed, historical police procedure is examined with appropriate curiosity, and customers are assured that purchasing this volume will not automatically place them under surveillance. An entertaining and informative collectible for enthusiasts of British police history, Scotland Yard, true crime and vintage Penguin publications. A reminder that criminals have always been inventive, detectives have always been busy, and the paperwork has probably never been particularly enjoyable.…
