Prima edizione (presto tradotta in francese e pubblicata nel 1873 col titolo "Escalades dans les Alpes de 1860 à 1869") di opera sicuramente tra le più importanti, conosciute ed influenti della letteratura alpina di ogni tempo, "récits des ascensions réalisées par Whymper, en particulier de ses tentatives au Cervin et de la dramatique première ascension" (Perret). Whymper (1840-1911) da giovane fu pittore ed incisore, sulle orme del padre, più tardi divenne alpinista scalatore tra i più coraggiosi e noti di tutti i tempi: conquistò, tra gli altri, il Cervino (nel 1865), l'Aiguille Verte, le Grandes Jorasses, il Mont-Dolent e, nelle Ande equatoriali, il Chimborazo (di olte 6000 mt.).
