Signatures: [1],A2,a2,B-9Q2,[l]; ~ plus by ten copper engravings, including seven folding, and ten engraved maps; 50 tables and three maps in the text, bound in contemporary full calf, real raised bands, full gilt decorations in the panels, crushed crimson morocco label in gilt borders, all edges stained red (in contemp binding style), the boards are very worn with leather patched wanting, both boards and 2 preliminary blanck page are detached, rubricated title page (in red and black), printed in double columns with decorative head and tail-pieces, historiated initials, remains of a bookplate, on front paste-down, browning in upper gutter of four leaves, including one plate, light damp stain on one leaf, one page has pencilled marginalia, small hole in one leaf, with loss of two letters, ~ otherwise, text block and plates clear and bright, Some plates are signed by the engraver James Mynde (1740-1770), despite the problems and very good clean sound copy (ds1). ~ Arthur Bedford was educated at Oxford and ordained to the clergy in 1688. He was a curate in Bristol before obtaining the living at Newton St. Loe in Somerset, where he remained for 24 years before becoming chaplain to the Duke of Bedford. The Reverend Bedford was famous for his tracts, particularly those condemning the stage (". Horrid Blasphemies and Impieties which are Still Used in the English Playhouses " - 1719). He also published several works on the merits of uncomplicated religious music. The Scripture Chronology is an ambitious work. It applies a literal reading of the Scriptures in an attempt to document the time and location of events mentioned in the Old and New Testaments, such as the date of creation and the location of the Garden of Eden. Although indicative of the limited archaeological scholarship of Bedford's time, it is nonetheless interesting to read the arguments behind certain beliefs that have endured.…
