Young readers will be absorbed by this lushly photographed and illustrated book on the magic and marvels of the sea. Photographed by Official Navy Painter (France) Philip Plisson, The Sea takes readers on a globe-hopping journey to examine the many faces of the ocean, as well as the many ways people make their lives at sea. Part-documentary, part-poetic portrait, The Sea offers a range of educational views on everything from storm warnings to seabird species to the art of tying sailor knots. Traditional fishing is observed, as well as lesser-known industries such as fish-farming, oyster-farming and salt-farming. Also interwoven into the text are ecological issues addressing how man has soiled the sea with pollution and waste, so there is an environmentally conscious message as well.
À propos de l?auteur: Robert Burleigh has written many award-winning books for children, including fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Booklist praised his work, saying, "Burleigh paints mesmerizing word pictures on the page," and School Library Journal said that his writing "encourages an understanding of the artistic process and self-expression." He was awarded the Orbis Pictus Award in 1992 for Flight: The Journey of Charles Lindbergh, and has also been the recipient of School Library Journal's Best Book of the Year Award (Hoops, Harcourt Brace 1997) and the 2001 New York City Book Award for Looking for Bird in the Big City (Harcourt Brace 2001).
