If you have ever wondered why other species can communicate but never develop syntax, adapt to environments but never build civilizations, or solve problems but never ask "why," this book was written for you.
What accounts for the profound cognitive and behavioral gap between humans and other animals?
Mainstream neuroscience holds that the human brain is simply an extension of shared animal neural architecture, with human uniqueness arising from quantitative, not qualitative, change.
Yet this cannot explain why humans possess language, declarative memory, abstract reasoning, and symbolic thought, despite sharing similar neural structures with other species.
This book offers a different answer: after birth, the human brain may develop, through a previously overlooked cellular pathway, an entirely new cortical neural network found in no other species: the Mind Network.
Here is how it may happen. After birth, hippocampal neurogenesis undergoes a brief peak, amplified by the infant's informational environment. Normally, most of these new neurons undergo apoptosis and are cleared away.
But a subset of these neurons may escape this process: excessive proliferation at the hippocampal cellular level causes them to accumulate beyond the hippocampus's capacity, overflowing the hippocampus proper and reaching the white matter.
Within the white matter migratory stream, these overflow neurons occupy the migration channels normally used by other neurons.
Displaced neurons are forced onto a non-canonical route into the cortex, where they form independent connections unrelated to the region's existing function, gradually giving rise to a relatively independent structure never before identified, which may be part of why it has escaped detection by neuroscience for so long.
Earlier "human-specific brain region" hypotheses stopped at asserting that such a structure exists, without explaining where it comes from. The Mind Network hypothesis goes further, offering a complete, testable pathway: the joint product of environmental stimulation, developmental timing, and cellular migration.
If the Mind Network truly exists, abnormalities in its formation may underlie some of the most difficult neurological disorders we know: Autism Spectrum Disorder, schizophrenia, infantile amnesia, and Alzheimer's disease.
Philosophy, religion, psychology, and cognitive science have long treated human uniqueness as self-evident, while evolutionary theory and neuroscience emphasize continuity between human and animal brains, and neither side has fully reconciled the other.
Human evolution, this book argues, may have involved not only quantitative expansion, but a fundamental structural breakthrough.

We ask all customers to contact us for authorisation should they wish to return their order. Orders returned without authorisation may not be credited.
If you wish to return, please contact us within 14 days of receiving your order to obtain authorisation.
Returns requested beyond this time will not be authorised.
