Contemporary full calf with gilt-tooled border, rebacked, flat spine in six compartments of gilt bands, black morocco label on two. , Text with wide margins, several tissue guards present. The plates were drawn by Home, engraved by Hawksworth and published by R. Brown. According to Cox, there should be 5 maps and 29 engraved plates, however, it is commonly found with only 4 maps. Home had been serving as a painter in Madras during the latter half of the 18th century, and was thus able to paint some very remarkable views of the country, as well as several battle plans and maps during the third Anglo-Mysore war (1789-92). Due to France?s embroilment in revolution, they were unable to aid their Indian allies, the Kingdom of Mysore, and thus Britain was able to defeat Mysore to the advantage of Britain?s Indian allies., Size : 4to., With 33 plates, including 4 folding maps (one hand-coloured) and 29 copper-engraved views of India. Also with 13 leaves of Persian (Urdu) script, one at the beginning of each section. , References : Cox I:305; DNB IX:1132., P.
