Paperback. Etat : Good. Selected Stories and Poems (1962) by Edgar Allan Poe (Airmont Publishing) Here it is: a slim, unassuming paperback that contains an extremely high concentration of dread. Edgar Allan Poe didn?t so much write as politely invite the darkness in, offer it a chair, and then ask it to describe its childhood . This is the literary equivalent of opening a cupboard in a quiet house and finding it inexplicably full of fog. In these selected tales and poems, you get Poe in his natural habitat: candlelit rooms, uneasy minds, suspicious noises, and narrators who insist they are perfectly calm while doing the sort of thing that suggests they should not be left alone with a fireplace poker. His stories hum with paranoia, grief, obsession, and the creeping sense that the walls are listening ? and yes, they probably are. There are mysteries that are not so much solved as succumbed to . There is beauty that feels faintly dangerous. There is humour too, if you like your humour with a nervous edge and a shovel. And then there are the poems: a parade of rhythm and melancholy that makes you want to stare out of a rain-streaked window and dramatically consider the meaning of existence, preferably while a raven judges you from somewhere nearby. Poe?s poetry doesn?t merely sound gothic ? it practically arrives wearing a cloak and demanding to be addressed as ?sir? This particular edition ? Airmont Publishing, 1962 , no ISBN (because the early 60s were delightfully casual about such things) ? is a little mid-century portal into 19th-century gloom. It?s the kind of paperback you could keep in a pocket, a glove compartment, or beside the bed if you enjoy falling asleep to the comforting thought that your floorboards might have secrets. Condition: Good , as sold by Crappy Old Books ? meaning it?s solid, readable, and ready for duty. Possibly with the faint, righteous wear of a book that has been carried, thumbed, and opened at questionable hours. (Which is, frankly, the ideal way to experience Poe: slightly tired, mildly over-caffeinated, and convinced you heard something.) Perfect for: Readers who like their classics with a side of unease Anyone who thinks ?cosy bedtime reading? should include at least one unreliable narrator Fans of elegant language describing absolutely unhinged situations People who enjoy saying ?Nevermore? in everyday contexts, for no reason, to the alarm of friends and family In short: a compact anthology of beauty, doom, and exquisitely polished despair ? proof that you don?t need a huge book to have a very large shadow. From Crappy Old Books , where the paperbacks are humble, the vibes are haunted, and the poetry may or may not be watching you as you read. N° de réf. du vendeur 5737
