A propos de cet article

Second edition, Susan Elizabeth Darwin's copy, inscribed "Susan E. Darwin, March 1838" in the first volume. Susan Darwin was an older sister of Charles Darwin, who affectionately called her "Granny" for stewarding his early scientific education. During the voyage of the Beagle, she reported to Charles on the reception in London and on errors she discovered in his account. Susan Darwin (1803-1866), alongside sisters Caroline and Marianne, ran the Darwin household of The Mount in Shrewsbury as a teenage matriarchy following the death of their mother Susannah (née Wedgwood, 1765-1817). Despite their older brother Erasmus calling Susan the most similar child to their father, Dr Robert Darwin, it was the two sons sent to follow their father in a medical career. Charles, however, found medicine unappealing and relied on Susan's discipline to keep up with his studies, writing to her in January 1826: "I have been most shockingly idle, actually reading two novels at once". Almost six years later, sister and brother began preparations for the voyage of the Beagle. Apologizing that the extent of his requests will make Susan "sincerely wish me at Terra de Fuego or any other Terra, but England" (6 September 1831), Charles asked her to procure him his microscope, geological compass, clothing, and Spanish books for the journey. An admirer of Jane Austen, Charles soon wrote to Caroline, "Love to Susan and tell her I will not take Persuasion, as the Captain says he will not read it, & there is no danger of my forgetting it" (late October 1831). After reading Charles's first letter home after sailing, Susan wrote back describing how "all the house rejoiced over it most heartily: the happy account you give of yourself and all your enjoyments in the tropical world far exceeded what we most hoped for you" (12 May 1832). Of his diary, which Charles sent home in instalments, Susan told him "what a nice amusing book of travels it wd. make if printed, but there is one part of your Journal as your Granny I shall take in hand namely several little errors in orthography of which I shall send you a list that you may profit by my lectures tho' the world is between us" (12 February 1834). Updating him on his reception in London scientific circles, she relayed the great geologist Adam Sedgwick's prediction that, if Charles survives the journey, he will become "a great name among the Naturalists of Europe". With all the fame and danger surrounding his enterprise, Susan confided her sense that "I sometimes can hardly fancy you are my brother" (22 November 1835). Regarding the household of Charles's later years, his son Francis Darwin recalled that "Walter Scott, Miss Austen, and Mrs. Gaskell, were read and re-read till they could be read no more" (Life I, p. 102). Peter W. Graham contrasts the two figures in his monograph Jane Austen & Charles Darwin: Naturalists and Novelists (2008), dedicating a chapter to the role of siblings in their lives and works. The first edition of Sense and Sensibility was published in October 1811 and sold out by July 1813. This second edition appeared that October, and Austen received her copy on 6 November, writing to her sister Cassandra: "My 2nd Edit. has stared me in the face. I cannot help hoping that many will feel themselves obliged to buy it. I shall not mind imagining it a disagreeable duty to them, so as they do it" (quoted in Gilson, p. 16). Peter Harrington acquired this copy directly from the Wedgwood family estate in 2026. The Darwin-Wedgwood family were closely interconnected through the descendants of Erasmus Robert Darwin (1731-1802) and the potter Josiah Wedgwood (1730-1795), themselves friends and prominent abolitionists. Gilson A2. Francis Darwin, ed., The Life and Letters of Charles Darwin, 1897. 3 vols, duodecimo (173 x 99 mm). Bound without half-titles. Bound with publisher's final blanks. Vol. I, sig.
