A uniformly bound set of these sensationally popular editions illustrated by Hugh Thomson, which were the first to feature illustrations throughout the volumes. This set compromises first Thomson editions of all titles bar Sense and Sensibility. Thomson (1860-1920) was celebrated in particular for his illustrated editions of English literary classics. He illustrated Pride and Prejudice for George Allen's "peacock" edition (1894) and subsequently turned his pen to Austen's remaining works for Macmillan's Illustrated Standard Novels series (1895-7). His "light touch and feeling for period manners provide a charming and accessible gloss to the author's work" (ODNB). 5 vols, octavo (182 x 120 mm). Illustrated throughout by Hugh Thomson. Recent blue morocco, spines lettered in gilt, compartments framed with dotted and solid gilt fillets, gilt lozenges to centres, single gilt fillet to boards, marbled endpapers, edges gilt. Contents very occasionally foxed and toned. A near-fine set. N° de réf. du vendeur 191425
