Pages clean and unmarked.Volume 181B in the bound series issued by International Textbook Company, the publishing arm of the International Correspondence Schools of Scranton, Pennsylvania. ICS grew out of a mine-safety question-and-answer column run by Thomas J. Foster in the Colliery Engineer and Metal Miner and enrolled its first class of 500 miners in 1891; cumulative enrollment reached four million by 1930, making it the most successful correspondence school in American history. The bound volumes gathered the loose serial-numbered Instruction Papers into permanent form, this one comprising Shaper and Slotter Work (Serial 2222, Edition 1), Boring-Mill Work, and Working Chilled Iron. Three trades in one volume: the shaper and the slotter, the short-stroke machines that cut flat, angular and irregular surfaces and the keyways and internal work a planer could not reach, then vertical and horizontal boring mills including the turret-head vertical mill and the cylinder mills of the engine shops, and finally the specialized business of turning, grinding, planing and drilling chilled iron, work that defeated ordinary tool steel and drove the shift to high-speed steel. Sections on broaching, keyway cutters, cutting speeds, and the tooling and setups of each machine. The double-page plate in the first section is signed at foot BB 181B 2222 for the publisher's Bluebook series. Copyrights of 1934 over the 1927 originals, with Working Chilled Iron carrying its 1915 copyright.Contents: Shaper and Slotter Work: Shapers; Construction and Operation; Crank-Driven Shaper; Geared Shaper; Traveling-Head Shaper; Draw-Cut Shaper; Cutting Tools and Speeds; Cutting Tools; Cutting Speeds; Shaper Equipment; Shaper Operations; Taking Cuts; Shaper Attachments; Slotters; Construction of Slotters; Slotter Operation; Keyway for Cutters; Broaching.
