A propos de cet article

Four vols. Large 8vo, orig. semi-stiff wrappers (wrappers a little wormed), orig. title-slips, new stitching. [Japan]: [19th century]. A rare example of kinsei mokkatsujiban ?????? (movable type editions of the early modern period) of the supplement to Wei Yuan’s "famous book" (Peter C. Perdue, China Marches West: The Qing Conquest of Central Eurasia [Harvard: 2005], p. 191), a Record of Sacred Military Campaigns. The Record, published in 1842, is "an account of the military operations of Ch’ing rulers up to the Tao-kuang period" (Tu Lien-chê in Eminent Chinese of the Ch’ing Period, Vol. 2, p. 851). It is a "touchstone history of the early Qing" (Jonathan Schlesinger, A World Trimmed with Fur: Wild Things, Pristine Places, and the Natural Fringes of Qing Rule [Stanford: 2017], p. 90). The book covers the Qing conquest of Ming China, the early wars against Korea, the Rebellion of the Three Feudatories, the subjugation of the western Mongols, and more. Our edition of the Appendix, containing parts 11-14, discusses various supplementary topics, such as military logistics and provisions, verification of anecdotes, accounts of specific military exploits, and "five essays discussing war." We see in this book a Chinese author who identified with the Manchu Qing imperial project and subjected it to a celebratory scholarly treatment. Wei was writing at a time when the military fortunes of the Qing were being reversed. Having expanded the empire’s borders continuously during its first century, from the mid-17th to the mid-18th century, the Manchus had become entrenched by the early 19th century. When Wei was writing, the Qing empire was in a losing conflict with Great Britain in the first Opium War. Wei shored up the successful military heritage of the Qing empire in his Record and its Appendix. Wei Yuan ?? (1794-1857) was one of the most prominent Chinese intellectuals of the 19th century, with an influence that reached Japan. He was a classicist, historian, geographer, and geostrategist who "drew connections across time and space on an unprecedented scale" (Matthew W. Mosca, From Frontier Policy to Foreign Policy: The Question of India and the Transformation of Geopolitics in Qing China [Stanford: 2013], p. 302). Our movable type edition includes Wei’s Preface to the Record and its table of contents. The four volumes all have original title slips, using the four characters for spring, summer, fall, and winter as ordinals. Fine set and very rare; WorldCat locates only one other set, in Japan. Some worming, mostly marginal but also touching some characters. …
