Synopsis :

202p orange and white paperback, first Penguin edition, spine a little faded otherwise bright and well preserved copy

Biographie de l'auteur: C. S. Forester was born in Cairo in 1899, where his father was stationed as a government official. He studied medicine at Guy's Hospital, and after leaving Guy's without a degree he turned to writing as a career. His first success was Payment Deferred, a novel written at the age of twenty-four and later dramatized and filmed with Charles Laughton in the leading role. In 1932 Forester was offered a Hollywood contract, and from then until 1939 he spent thirteen weeks of every year in America. On the outbreak of war he entered the Ministry of Information and later he sailed with the Royal Navy to collect material for The Ship. He made a voyage to the Bering Sea to gather material for a similar book on the United States Navy, and it was during this trip that he was stricken with arteriosclerosis, a disease which left him crippled. However, he continued to write and in the Hornblower novels created the most renowned sailor in contemporary fiction. He died in 1966.

Paperback. Etat : Used. Ahoy there, literary adventurers! Prepare to set sail on a voyage of questionable character with ?The Ship? by the illustrious CS Forester, a name that rings like a ship?s bell in the murky waters of maritime literature and perhaps the only literary captain who can navigate the stormy seas of your bookshelf. Published by Penguin in the mystical year of 1990?an era when shoulder pads were large, and plots were even larger?this tome promises to whisk you away to a world where the only thing more unstable than the ocean is the author?s sense of narrative direction. Imagine, if you will, a hefty vessel bobbing on waves that are not just a metaphor for life?s unpredictability, but a literal interpretation of how poorly one might fare during a bout of seasickness. What could be more enthralling than a tale that explores the depths of human resilience and the questionable choices of sailors who, let?s face it, should have probably stayed on dry land? The cover gives you just a hint of the nautical nonsense contained within?a dull palette that suggests boredom more than it does adventure. You might even wonder if it was designed during a particularly uninspired storm in a design studio. This book, dear reader, is not merely a collection of words bound by covers; it?s a time capsule of sorts, encapsulating all the fervent enthusiasm of the late 20th century for anything that floats. Filled with dialogue that may or may not have been borrowed from actual seafaring legends, ?The Ship? is a literary vessel that promises to take you on a journey through the mind of a man who probably spent more time on boats than he should have. Forester has crafted a narrative that, while ostensibly about a ship, might actually be about the trials and tribulations of a writer wrestling with the very nature of storytelling?or perhaps just wrestling with a particularly stubborn typewriter. Upon opening these worn pages, you may find yourself questioning your own life choices. Have you ever considered taking up sailing as a hobby? After reading this, you might suddenly re-evaluate your affinity for dry land and reconsider that sailing course you signed up for out of sheer boredom. The realization that the ocean is not just a vast expanse of water, but also a metaphorical abyss for your sanity, might strike you like a wayward wave. Here, the ship becomes a microcosm of human folly, where each character is less a hero and more a quirky sidekick in a tragicomedy that nobody asked for. What can you expect to find in the belly of this literary leviathan? A cornucopia of themes often glossed over by more respectable authors, no doubt. Here?s what you might encounter: A ship that may or may not be cursed, depending on how the plot unfolds. Characters that are either heroic or utterly forgettable, often within the same chapter. The relentless crashing of waves, both literal and metaphorical, as the characters struggle to maintain their sanity. Occasionally profound musings that are quickly overshadowed by bouts of abject silliness. A sense of adventure that might leave you feeling as lost as the ship itself. Condition: Used is perhaps an understatement, as this edition has seen better days. The pages are yellowed, likely from years of being passed around by overzealous admirers who were hoping for a heart-pounding maritime thriller but instead found a rather meandering discourse on the existential dread of being at sea. If you?re the type who prefers your books with a hint of nostalgia and a whiff of the salt air, you?ll feel right at home with this one. Just try not to read it while on an actual boat; the irony might be too much to bear. So, if you fancy a romp through the world of nautical fiction that?s less ?Master and Commander? and more ?lost at sea,? then ?The Ship? is calling your name. Grab it before it floats away?after all, it?s being offered by Crappy Old Books, where even the dust bunnies have stories to tell. THIS BOOK BEARS THE CRAPPY OLD BOOKS STAMP. IF THAT IS UNDESIRABLE PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS. THE STAMP MARKS WHICH IS USUALLY TO THE FRONT AND BACK INNER PAGES SAYS SOLD BY CRAPPY OLD BOOKS WITH WEB SITE URL. IT IN NO WAY DEMINISHED FROM THE READING. IF YOU WANT A PRISTINE BOOK, PLEASE FIND ANOTHER BOOK IN BETTER CONDITION SOMEWHERE ELSE. N° de réf. du vendeur 2181
