People will assume this book is about a relationship.
It isn't.
This book is about what happened after I asked for help.
People often believe that the worst part of abuse is the abuse itself. For me, it wasn't. The deepest wounds came afterward—when I was left trying to navigate systems I believed would protect me. Instead, I experienced fear, confusion, financial strain, and a profound sense of being unheard.
This memoir is not an attempt to rewrite court records or ask readers to reach legal conclusions. It is my account of what I lived through, how I experienced it, and the lasting impact it had on my life.
Trauma does not always end when a relationship ends.
Sometimes it begins there.
The legal proceedings, the uncertainty, the repeated need to explain myself, and the emotional weight of feeling that my voice was not fully heard became their own source of suffering. I questioned my memory. I questioned my judgment. Eventually, I questioned who I was.
The woman I used to be slowly disappeared.
I stopped laughing the way I once did.
I stopped trusting my own instincts.
I stopped believing that telling the truth would be enough.
People have called me strong because I kept going.
I don't feel strong.
I wasn't brave every day.
There were days when getting out of bed felt impossible. There were days when I smiled simply because I didn't have the energy to explain what was happening inside me. I became skilled at looking okay while quietly falling apart.
I didn't survive because I was fearless.
I survived because there was no other choice.
This book is about what prolonged trauma can do to a person. It is about the cost of silence, the emotional burden of feeling unheard, and the search for justice—not only within institutions, but within myself.
As you read these pages, you may not agree with every conclusion I reached. You may see events differently than I did. That is okay. My purpose is not to convince you of what to believe. My purpose is to tell you what this experience felt like from the inside.
For a long time, I believed my silence protected everyone except me.
Writing this book is the first time I have chosen my own voice over my fear.
If these pages help even one person feel less alone, then telling my story will have been worth it.
Welcome to my story.
