A propos de cet article

First edition of an important and richly illustrated travel narrative by Fedor Jagor, chronicling his journey through Southeast Asia in the mid-19th century. This volume presents a vivid portrayal of life in Singapore, Malacca, and Java, combining maritime adventure, ethnographic observation, and commercial commentary with perceptive cultural insight.Jagor’s clear yet erudite prose captures the complexity of colonial port cities, local customs, and plantation economies, paying particular attention to Chinese merchant networks and indigenous craftsmanship. The text is accompanied by 24 finely executed illustrations, many derived from the author’s own photographs and sketches, offering rare visual documentation of the region during this period.Fedor Jagor (1816-1900) was a distinguished German ethnologist, naturalist, and explorer, celebrated for his extensive travels throughout South and Southeast Asia. Born in Berlin, he devoted much of his career to fieldwork in India, Burma, the Philippines, and the Indonesian archipelago, gathering invaluable ethnographic and natural specimens for Berlin’s leading institutions. His richly detailed travel writings, including Reiseskizzen aus Singapore, Malacca, Java (1866) and Travels in the Philippines (1875), provide rare first-hand perspectives on the cultures, landscapes, and colonial dynamics of the regions he explored. A respected member of the Berlin Society for Anthropology and the Leopoldina Academy, Jagor’s legacy endures through the numerous artefacts, photographs, and species named in his honour, as well as the substantial collections he bequeathed to the Ethnological Museum of Berlin. With an inscription on the verso of the first free flyleaf. The edges and corners of the boards are bumped, the spine is rubbed, somewhat browned and foxed throughout. Otherwise in good condition.l Not in Embacher; Howgego; Lach van Kley.
