With entries for Irving, Fenimore Cooper, Longfellow, Hawthorne, Wendell Holmes, etc. Housed in a purpose-made case, quarter maroon leather over cloth, gilt title to spine. Marbled interior with ribbon ties to fore-edge. Overall a 'Very Good' copy. Published while the painting was on exhibition in New York, this booklet provided brief biographical notes concerning those famous literary figures depicted whilst also advertising the availability of line engravings for subscribers. The painting, considered a 'National Picture' and seen as a fitting combination of American artistic and literary standards, took nearly 4 years to prepare and was praised for the excellent likenesses of Irving and his fellow literary countrymen.
