A sensitive picture book for children to help explain domestic abuse and having to move away from your family
Spark the little dragon lives happily with his parents and baby sister, Flame, until his mum and dad start fighting. When the children get hurt, they have to live with another carer, who helps them understand their situation and come to terms with their sad memories and painful feelings. How did Spark and Flame feel when they had to leave their parents? What memories do they have of what happened and how do they deal with them? Can they ever live with their mum and dad again?
The simple story and colourful illustrations make this book an excellent resource to use with children aged 4-8 years who have been affected by domestic abuse.
Abuse in any form has a fundamental impact on the way a child views themselves and the adults around them. The consequences of abuse are long-lasting, and the damage to a child’s sense of self-worth may not always be obvious. This engaging picture book can help children to understand their past trauma and loss, and start to heal.
Accompanying guidelines for adult readers describe how domestic abuse can affect children emotionally, cognitively, biologically and socially. Clear, practical advice is provided on how to discuss this difficult subject with child readers, and how to help affected children.
À propos de l'auteur: Judith Foxon worked in adoption with the Catholic Chldren's Society, Nottingham. Direct work with children has formed a significant part of her social work experience over many years and as an adoptive parent and foster carer herself, she is strongly committed to developing better ways of helping families to communicate with and support their children. She trialled this book with children of differing ages in two local authorities before publication. She believes the book can be used simply as a story, particularly for getting to know a child, as a workbook and as a tool for therapy.
